One of Sony's most unique accomplishments was the introduction
of the Trinitron color TV picture tube.
The Sony Trinitron is not just the name Sony calls their picture tube. It is a totally different, patented, Emmy Award winning color picture tube.
Instead of 3 electron guns, Sony uses one electron gun to shoot the three beams of color. Since there is only one electron gun in the neck of the picture tube, one large lens can be placed in the neck of the tube, instead of 3 small focus systems. These focus lens are not made of glass, but an electromagnetic focus system that controls where the electron beams strike the face of the tube.
Since the 3 beams goes through the center of the tube they are more tightly controlled.
Coventional picture tubes are called a shadow mask tube because they have a metal sheet with holes in front of the phosphors on the tube face. This prevents the beams from hitting the wrong color on the screen. It absorbs many electrons so it creates heat. Alignment needs to be perfect horizontally and vertically to correctly hit the phosphors.
The Sony Trinitron uses vertical slits called the Aperture Grille. Alignment is crrtical only horizontally. Less electrons are absorbed.
The Trinitron allows for a perfectly flat tube, and Sony introduced flat tubes back in 1968 when the Trinitron was invented. In 1998, the Trinitron Wega FD display was introduced with a totally flat face.
The flat face reflects light away from the viewer. Plus, horizontal and vertical lines are straight no curved as with conventional shadow mask tubes.
Remember, all other picture tubes are based on the shadow mask besides Sony.
The Sony HS Series. These TVs are considered HD monitors or HD ready. They do not have a built-in HD tuner. This is really not a problem since the cable companies now provide subscribers with HD cable boxes. Some of these cable boxes now come with Hard Drive recorders that can record programs in High Definition.
If you use satellite as a program provider a TV with a built-in tuner offers no advantages whatsoever. Your satellite box (and your cable box) is your TV tuner. Change channels on your box and your TV shows you your program.
CineMotion. Motion picture film has 24frames per second, but video has 30 frames. To compensate the way film is shown on video, a reverse 3:2 pulldown circuit creates a video picture that emulates film more accurately.
DRC. Digital Reality Creator is an proprietary Sony technology
that displays 960 lines from conventional 480 line analog pictures.
It's more than a line doubler and creates a picture with 4 times
the data. The new version allows adjustment of detail (Reality)
levels and smoothness (Clarity) to make the best picture.
