SONY STR-DH190 2 CHANNEL STEREO ONLY 100 WATT/CH RECEIVER.   $249
ONE OF THE BEST BUYS IN AUDIO TODAY!
LOOK AT THE BACK OF THIS RECEIVER. It has a left and right (white and red) analog PHONO INPUT.
You can't plug your turntable into CD, coax, video optical etc. You need a dedicated phono input.
Why? Because coming out of the phono cartridge is 3 thousandths of a volt. Coming out of a CD player or audio out of a VCR is one whole volt.
But there's more. All vinyl records are made with RIAA standard curve that reduces the bass and boosts the high frequencies. Othewise, the bass would make the grooves to wide and the needle couldn't stay within the track. High frequencies are boosted to be stronger than record surface noise.
So, in playback, the bass needs to be boosted and the high reduced... RIAA equalization.
Also, that tiny 3 thousands of a volt needs special low noise circuitry to make it stronger.
Some turntables have a phono preamp built-in, but it is always of inferior quality to a phono preamp built-in to a receiver or amplifier. Keep in mind separate phono preamps can run thousands of dollars for high end models.
The Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver has a quality built-in phono preamp. Other low price stereo receivers don't a built in preamp.
The Sony STR-DH190 is also a powerful stereo receiver with true audio rating of 90 watts, over the FULL AUDIO RANGE, 20-20kHz with less than 0.9% distortion into standard 8 ohm loads.
