     Most turntables we would describe as "record grinders" lack two things. One is a detachable headshell, yet many very expensive turntables that do not have detachable headshells because it adds an additional contact point and resonance. Second, a counter balanced tonearm, which allows you to upgrade your phono cartridge, and re-adjust for the different weight of a different cartridge.
    Yet, the Audio-technica has a built-in phono cartridge that can be upgraded, and you don't need to rebalance your tonearm.
     The included Audio-technica AT-VM95C dual magnet cartridge has a conical stylus. Simply change the stylus, to an eliptical, micro-line or even a Shibata and you have a significant upgrade. The fact the Audio-technica advocates using a high end Shibata in this low price turntables shows how low in friction and mass the tonearm is on this AT-LP70 turntable.
