Did you know, in all the years that the color TV picture tube was the mainstay of TV technology their were two types. Every TV maker used the shadow mask tube... every one except Sony. The Sony Trinitron picture tube used one gun and one lens instead of three. It used an Aperture grille instead of a shadow mask, and offered flat front face instead round.
Amazing at it may seem, the same year, 1968, Sony introduced the Trinitron, Sony produced a 100 inch prototype flat screen TV.
In 1985 sony introduced a flat screen TV called the Plasmatron that combined both LCD and plasma technology.
Sony was also the first to introduce LED technology to flat screen TVs.

The Sony Video Engine. Television quality is not determined only by the LCD panels, LED lights or some exaggerated contrast ratio. All the parts come together to create a TV system. The combination of these parts is what determines the quality of the pictures you see.
Sony engineers use various separate technologies to improve your picture including a 3D comb filter to separate color from detail information. CinemaMotion Reverse pull down adjusts for the differences in the 24 frames in film and 30 frames in video. True Cinema actually shows 24 frames used in film. Clear Resolution Enhancer is a advanced circuitry to improve sharpness. Advanced Contrast Enhancer increases the dynamic range. Digital noise reduction and MPEG noise also improve your picture.
Motionflow XR-240. Sony engineers borrowed from technology found in Sony broadcast cameras that eliminated the blur when viewing sports video in slow motion. The Motionflow technology itself creates additional video frames to smooth out the motion. With Motionflow 240 Sony sophisticated algorithms reduce blur and create these additional frames. Some manufacturers claim high “refresh rates” but all they do is turn on and off the LEDs, and do not use circuitry to generate new frames.
S-Force Surround Sound. Sound is important for your TV enjoyment. You can add a great home theater system with 5 or 7 speakers plus subwoofer, but that costs a lot of money and takes up a lot of space.
Sony invented digital signal processing and uses this digital technology and the built-in speakers to immerse you in sound. It enlarges the sweet spot, letting you get good stereo effect even you’re not sitting in the center. Without rear speakers, the Sony S Force simulates the surround sound effect.
