Introducing the Next Standard by Which All TV Displays Will Be Judged in the Future

The Sony Qualia 004
Sony made the first projection TV by placing a lens in front a bright Trinitron picture tube and shinning it on a screen. That was 1972. Sony went on to become a leader in professional 3 CRT front projectors and later introduced LCD front projectors. The Grand Wega was created by taking a LCD front projector and putting it inside a box. Now, Sony has raised the bar for all television displays with the introduction of Qualia.
Most HD broadcasts use the 1080i standard. Each horizontal line has 1920 pixels and there are 1080 lines. The best plasma TV has 1365 pixels per line and only 768 lines. So the digital signal is down converted in plasma TVs. Those that see high quality HD pictures on a plasma or a Sony Grand Wega are amazed at the quality of the picture. Yet, this is only 71% of the full picture being transmitted. Sony technology continues to progress.
The SXRD. Sony has developed a new technology for LCD television. This new chip has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 so it has a resolution equal to the highest High Definition standard. Total pixels... 6,220,800. There is no loss of digital data.
The new SXRD stands for Silicon Crystal Reflective Display. SXRD™ stand to be the next standard by which televisions are judged, just as the XBR Trinitron was twenty years ago.
QUALIA. The SXRD chip is so far superior to anything that has preceeded it, that Sony has created a new sub brand called Qualia. This new line will represent the latest in Sony technology acheivements. Technology, not yet ready for mass production, but new technology that can be manufactured in small quantities at high prices for those that demand the finest and newest audio and video technology. Technology that only Sony has the in house know how to produce.
Qualia 004. The first Qualia product is the SXRD front screen projection set shown
above. Not only does this chip reproduce each and every pixel of the true High Definition ATSC broadcast, but it eliminates many other picture problems.
Each of the SXRD pixels is 9um. The spacing between each pixel has been reduced dramatically to only .35um. This allows a 92% fill rate. In other words the cell structures of each pixel in previous designs blocked as much as 50% of the light. This created was has been called the screen door effect. The SXRD allows 92% of the light to pass.
New ultra thin liquid crystal layer of only 1.5 to 2.0 um without spacers allows ultra fast 5 msecond repsonse time. The vertically aligned liquid crystal allows for a 3000 to 1 contrast ratio.
Xenon Lamp. Sony Designed for professional quality, the 004 Qualia uses the same type of lamp found in motion picture theaters, pure Xenon. Attention to detail includes equal length optical path for each red, blue , and green colors.
Bright lights create heat. To remove the heat fans are used and they make noise. Of course the Qualia uses the quietest fan and is designed to prevent noise... another detail, textured foamed aluminum cover to insulates the room from fan noise and heat. This Xenon bulb includes a massive alunium heat sink with radial spokes to conduct heat away.
Carl Zeiss Lens. The Qualia 004 is not a machine of compromise. Vario-Sonnar® lenses are used. You must choose the right focal length. The lens barrel is crafted from a solid billet of aluminum for precision, accurate focus, and correct geometry. The lens has no less than 15, all glass elements, all with anti-reflective coating. To adjust for room light conditions a 3 position optical iris is used coupled with a Cinema Black Pro system.
ProVideo. Sony has been and is the leader in professional video production and expecially High Definition. Sony provides HD cameras for original HD production from late night TV shows to most football games. No compromise was and is the design philoophy of Qaulia. The Qualia 004 uses no compromise, pro grade video circuitry throughout producing the finest picture available.
