It's amazing how cheap you can buy a complete home theater system today. And while it is pretty easy to make an inexpensive receiver that sounds decent, no matter how much you spend, the speakers are the weakest link of any audio system. The speakers included in HTIB... that stands for Home Theater in a Box, are quite mediocre.
THE SPEAKER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE SYSTEM. No matter how good your CD player or receiver, the sound you hear is no better than the quality of sound from the loudspeaker. A speaker has to convert the low distortion electrical amplifier signal into mechanical energy. A device that changes one form of energy into another is called a transducer. Speakers are transducers and its a lot harder to make a good transducer than an amp.
Making great speakers for the price of good is what Boston Acoustics is all about. The new Boston Micro series included here, represent low price, tiny size, and yet, a true two-way design. By combining quality Sony electronics and name brand Boston speakers, we have created a home theater system that dramatically ups the sound quality compared with Home Theater in a Box systems. When people hear how much better a system can sound, plus the longer warranty offered by components, and Alterman Audio doubles that warranty, the value is far greater.
TRUE TWEETER TWO WAY SYSTEM... Unlike that tiny, ultra popular speaker, advertised on national TV, the Boston satellite uses specialized drivers. A small, .75in dome tweeter reproduces the highs clearly. A 3 in midrange/woofer does the voice (midrange) and upper bass. All high fidelity speakers use woofers and tweeters or additional speaker drivers.
BOSTON POWERED SUB. A 8 in woofer with a dual voice coil reproduces the low bass. A built-in 50 watt amp powers the bass driver.
SONY DOLBY DIGITAL $200. Dolby Digital 5.1 is an all digital surround sound system. Each of the five channels offer near CD quality sound, plus there's a dedicated LFE Low Frequency Effects channel. This is a separate digital audio channel with bass only that is used to feed your powered subwoofer. is rated 90 watts x 6 per channel. (.7% THD @1kHz). That is plenty of power for most speakers to fairly loud levels.
BLUELIGHT 5.1 INDICATOR DVDs have menus. Most require you to select which soundtrack, digital or pro-logic you want to hear. When playing digital 5.1 you can easily see from your easy chair thanks to Sony Blue light 5.1 indicator. This little feature is worth its weight in gold or blue.
DIGITAL SONY DVD $80 Remember, Sony co-invented the CD, and DVD is based on many CD patents. Sony makes chips and many of the key components found in the DVD. Some key brands actually buy their DVD players from another company, let alone make most the internal parts like Sony.
SONY AUDIO PRIORITY. Except for Sony, all DVD players require the use of the on screen menu to select the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack before playing the movie. Sony's Audio Priority does it automatically.
Flexible Disc playback. Not only does this little Sony do a great job of playing DVD movies, but it plays other forms of optical discs too.
Down load music MP3 files on your computer. Burn them on a CD and this Sony machine plays them.
Make CD copies in full CD fidelity. This Sony plays both CDRs and rewriteable CDRWs.
